Following the ESA Executive Committee meeting held in October 2021, the ESA Executive Committee is consulting its members on an important matter.
Due to pandemic restrictions, the International Sociological Association (ISA) has decided to move the date of its World Congress to be held in Melbourne, Australia, from 2022 to 2023.
Two major conferences in a single year (ISA and ESA) may subject members to scheduling conflicts as well as undue financial strain. Additionally, the ISA World Congress of Sociology will continue to coincide with ESA conferences in the future, placing the ESA under increased financial pressure. Therefore, a survey of ESA membership was launched to determine if members think that postponing the 16th ESA Conference to 2024 to avoid clashing with the ISA World Congress of Sociology in 2023 could be the right solution.
By December, 3rd 2021, all members in good standing should have received and responded to the above-mentioned consultation.
· If the membership consultation recommends that we should hold the conference in 2023, then preparations will continue.
· If the membership consultation recommends that the 16th ESA Conference should be held in 2024, then the President will call – as per Article 5 of the Statutes – a formal General Assembly (to be held online) in order to consider all of the following:
postponing the conference to 2024, extending by one year the term of office of the Executive Committee, and extending the membership for ESA members in good standing for one additional year with no additional fees.
The decision of the General Assembly will be final.
The participation in this consultation is vital.
Every member in good standing should check if the invitation to vote from Simply Voting was received (do not forget to verify the spam box). If you didn’t receive it, please contact the office by writing to esa[at] europeansociology.org
