Young peoples’ understanding of human rights, with particular reference to race equity
School of Social Sciences and Professions
This will be a study of young peoples’ constructions of human rights, focusing on aspects of human dignity, equality and diversity (with particular respect of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees).
‘Young people’ for this study would be a selected range within the ages of 10 to 25. The area of focus would probably be in Europe (continental, UK/Ireland, but probably outside London) identified by the student and agreed with the supervisory team. Rights will probably be taken from the European Charter of Human Rights (which has a legal standing), but these are not regarded as specifically ‘European’ rights. We envisage that the research project will employ primarily qualitative approaches, though some quantitative work could be included. In their Proposal Statement the applicant should suggest the particular rights, the specific age range, and the geographical focus of the study (all to be agreed in discussion with the supervisory team).
The applicant should demonstrate how their proposal would be relevant to advancing the University’s Race Equity Strategy (https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/about/our-university/university-publications/race-equity-strategic-plan/) in their statement on Equity and Values.
The project may be linked to the Jean Monnet Network ‘Citizenship Education in the Context of European Values’ (2021 – 2024/5) of which London Metropolitan is a partner institution.
